Primary Reading Day

The birth anniversary of our dear Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was celebrated on the 15th of October. As he was an avid reader, we at St. Stanislaus High School celebrated it as reading day. There were numerous activities held to encourage reading.

The children were asked to bring their favourite story books to read in class. The 1st and 2nd std. boys were also informed to come dressed as their favourite fairy tale character and a few boys read their stories out aloud in class. The boys of std. 3 and 4, after reading their books, either gave a gist of their story to the rest of the class or they wrote a character sketch on the book they read.

For Craft, they made a bookmark in class. In the Media Centre the teachers encouraged the boys to read by putting up informative reading software. A book fair was also held, where a variety of books were displayed.

The importance of reading was stressed by the teacher to make them aware that reading improves concentration, vocabulary and develops language and writing skills. Reading also helps their imagination soar and relaxes and calms their minds.

This poem sums it nicely: ‘Books are our friends Forget them not They expect nothing but Offer you a lot Give you knowledge of all sorts Books are your best friends Forget them not.
